Doing what you love

I often think about spiritual gifts....and how each of us have them.  God....our creator....gave them to us....and he didn't forget anyone.  Some of us may not be in tune with our gifts....but they are there.  I love what Susan Branch.....prolific illustrator and author says.......Think about what you loved to do as a child, and then do it.  Isn't this a wise quote?  I think this is a key to our spiritual gifts.....I truly feel God whispers them to us as a child....and we choose to develop them or unfortunately, we ignore our calling and wander down paths of confusion. I know there is a lot of research about this area....and I am not trying to reinvent the wheel.....just wanting to share my opinion and hopefully have you think about your gifts and how you are applying them yourself.  Honestly, I think I am in a transitional stage......just when I think I have figured it out.....well....self-doubt creeps in.  So I will return another time soon about how I am using my gifts.

Lately, I have gotten out my Susan Branch books....I think I own most of hers and I have also been visiting her lovely website.  I find myself being attracted to her writings, pictures, and thoughts.  So I invite you to visit her.....and maybe you will feel inspired, too.  You will discover how as an adult......she is doing exactly what she enjoyed as a child.

  1. Hi Jen. :o)
So much of your list, is mine. Playing school brings back so many memories. We lived in an old house with box like closets. I would use the closet as my "office" for school. :o) I colored a lot too, and spent much of my time outdoors. Riding my bike would have to be at the top of my list. Especially when one of my friends could go riding with me. We lived in a small town and pretty much rode our bikes anywhere we wanted too. Sometimes we would even pack a lunch and ride across town to a park, eat and play, and then come home. :o)
It is funny, I still love working with children and have home schooled for around 11-12 years. And I will be outdoors every opportunity I get. :o)
    Have a lovely weekend.
    your friend, Trish

  2. What a fun post! I am an only child but that didn't stop me from playing school and playing store! My dad would give me some of his invoices (the kind with the carbon copy so I could give the other copy to the "customer") I also remember pretending I was a D.J.,lol! I would record myself on the tape recorder and play it back to myself. My mom also took me to the beach every day in the summer where I would play for hours on end with my friend and her little sister! :)

    Have a great weekend!

  3. So true...when I was in college and struggling with school, my husband told me to pick what I liked to do. Not worry about getting a job, or how much money I would make - just pick what you enjoy. So I went from a psychology major to an art major and LOVED every second of school from that day on. God took care of the rest.

I love your childhood list and think that we all will find a treasure long forgotten if we go back to who we are from the beginning!

And I love Susan Branch too! I didn't realize she has a blog - I am going to check it out!

  4. great food for thought, Jen-I love your list! Childhood dreams are where everything I have now started, so I am in complete agreement about how important it is to stay connected to that part of ourselves! Have a great weekend!

  5. How fun Jen! :)
I liked to play Barbies with my little sis and neighborhood friends. I LOVED Little People. I also love my baby doll...Mrs. Wiggly. I named her that because her arms and legs wiggled. :) My sewing room has some of these things in them that I can see every day. It brings me back to innocence and my youth when things were stress free and much easier. I also ADORE Susan Branch! I have all her books and some fabric and get her Willard letters in my inbox. Can't wait to make one of her quilts. She has free patterns on her website. Have a good day!! :)

  6. WOW, I think we must be soul sisters. You're list looks like mine would look. I would add Barbies...they were so fun. I loved her clothes. Although I'm not sure what my spiritual gift means because I liked playing Barbies and dressing her up :) I too love Susan Branch and I think I have all of her books as well.
